The world of Dance & Music

The world of Dance and Music

Once there was this guy that just loved old folk music, He would travel around the United States and all the back country, finding and recording the music that was played there In the early days and to find out if it was still a tradition.

The music was different in all parts of the country and how and when thy played it was some what surprising, He had spent most of his life searching out this music and had gathered so much information that a rather large staff was needed to Catalog it. The recordings alone was beyond anyone to supervise. Soon a very large association was being built for preserving the music.

This man had heard of a place that had music unlike any other in the world. And he sat out to locate and record it. He had to travel half way around the world to get into that country and search until he found which part of the country it was played in. He had to travel through the thickest and most dangerous jungle in the world. He almost lost his life many of times. He spent over a year trying to find his way out of that place. He tried again a year later and finally found the tribe he was looking for, but he was too late getting there. He learned that the music that he was searching for was only played at a certain time of the year in a special ceremony and he had missed that ceremony by a number of months. They told him he would have to return again if he wanted to hear song and music.

The follow year he said, this time he would succeed or would not return until his mission was accomplished. He remained in this country until it was once again time for that special celebration. But he became sick and was put in a hospital. This hospital had called for a specialist from another country, who came to take care of this old man who appeared to be more than half dead. With the special treatment he made some recovery and started to make plans for his third attempt to get that music. The man never lasted long enough to get half way on his journey, He was buried there in the jungle, in a clearing close to a watering hole.

The following year, his assistant decided to finish his work, get the music and complete his life time mission. The assistant traveled through the jungle and had allowed plenty of time to be sure of getting there for the celebration and record the music. Luck was not to be there. The old Chief had gone on a vacation and the celebration was held a couple of weeks earlier, The assistant was mad as hell and was going to sue someone, but who could be sued, Not the country, not the tribe, there was no one to sue! The assistant went back to the United States and returned to work.

On one night, after arriving home, the assiatant decided to go out and get drunk. After a dozen strong drinks and having a hard time setting on that bar stool, a fellow with dark skin, came in and sat down down beside him. They started talking and the dark skin man said he was from this country that the assistant was talking about. As the conversation went on, it would soon be known that this dark skin man was a member of that same tribe. But he wouldn’t tell the drunk assistant anything about that special celebration or the music that was played.

The drunk assistant thought to himself, I’ll bet if I give this guy enough to drink, he could get that information out of him. And talk he did, so much and so fast the drunk couldn’t make notes fast enough to keep up with him. He wanted to know what the name of the song was and how the dance was done. The native man was talking faster than ever and about things that meant nothing to anyone.

Later the assistant and the native had fallen off of their stools and were taken out into the alley and left there. The police found them and they were taken to a detox unit. When they awoke. The native would not say a word and kept pushing the assistant away. Several days later, while going over all the notes that were made. (Those that could be read ) he arrived at this meaning.

The song was called “The Hokey Pokey” you put your right arm in and you put your right arm out and you do the Hokey Pokey and turn yourself around, that’s what it’s all about. Then you put your left arm in and your left arm out, you do the Hokey Pokey and and shake it all about, Turn yourself around and do the Hokey Pokey, that’s what it’s all about. Then you do it with each shoulder, hip, butt, leg and when it is all done, you have done the Hokey Poky.

Gotch you!
