I found a new Friend

It was found way down stream where it had washed up on the bank. It looked as if it had been well used up and there were no signs of life left in it. I am not sure of what to call it, as this is the first time I have ever seen one. I had to go home and get my little wagon to haul it, as it was just too heavy for me to carry. I carefully placed it in my wagon so it couldn’t roll around and I covered it with my jacket.

The trail was kind of rough so I chose the smoothest path to follow. I went into the house and told my mother that I had something in my wagon that I had never seen before and ask her to come out and take a look. When I took my jacket off of it, Mother screamed and pulled me away from it. When she screamed, this thing opened it’s eyes and looked at us. It didn’t move, but I could see that it was breathing, Then it closed it’s eyes again and laid there quietly.

Mother was using the phone, so I went back out side and I pulled my little wagon into the barn and covered the creature with an old saddle blanket. Then Mother yelled again and made me come into the house, why I did not know. When I asked. She just said because I want you to! A few hours later, a forest ranger and a game warden came by. They all went out into the barn, where they found my little wagon, but it was empty and the saddle blanket was on the ground along side.

The following morning, I went out to the barn and there it was laying in my wagon once more. It looked as if it had tried to get the saddle blanket back to cover it’s self, but just couldn’t make it. It just laid there and looked at me. I went back into the house and mother was busy, like she always is. I got some food and a container of water and back to the barn I went.

This animal was now setting up in the wagon so I put the food and drink there in front of it, then I backed off to see what it was going to do. I have never seen an animal like this and I remembered that the old dictionary in the living room, had pictures of many creatures. Back to the house I went, found the book and took it to my room and was searching for animal pictures. I found some that kind of look like it, but this one was larger and had a slightly different color. They were called Badgers.

That after noon, I ask if we could go to the library and mom said yes, she had to do a few things in town and she could drop me off and pick me up later. The lady at the library helped me to find a couple of books and left me alone to look at them.

I found the pictures, but couldn’t understand everything that I read in the book. I ask the librarian what a few words meant and she told me, then she suggested that I take the book home to read them. When my Mom came to get me, I had several books to take home, and mother was really impressed with my interest I reading.

I spent most of the night and the next day, looking at these books, but I needed help, who could I ask. Dad was always busy from sun up to sundown, and mother was always busy with things. There was an older retired man that lived down the road a piece, maybe he would help me. A day or so later, he stopped by to visit. I took him to the barn to show him what I had and he jumped back away from it.

He said Boy! do you know what that is? I said no, but it likes me! That is a Badger and they are meaner than any other animal. This one is old and a lot bigger than most. They are very protective of themselves and most animals will stay away from them. I sat down on a box close by and the Badger came over close to me and just sat there. I decided to get more water for the critter and went into this pen where the water was. This mean old bull didn’t like that, and came after me,

The critter came after the bull and the bull backed off fast. The old man about had a heart attack. He told me that he had never heard of a Badger making friends with a human and it appeared that this Badger had decide to adopted me as his.

You can’t imagine the uproar this caused. The game warden came again and set a trap for the Badger. When he was caught they took him away and turned him lose. But with in a week, he was back, I found him laying in my wagon, in the barn, I fed him and talked to him and I could touch and pet him all the I wanted. The Badger would leave for a while, them he would be back. He must have made himself a den somewhere close by after that we never seen a coyote, mountain lion or any other predators around.

As the years passed, I would see the old Badger now and them. When I left the farm, my folks said they would see the old Badger once in a while, but hadn’t seen him for several years. If there is a special place for old special animals, like the Badger, I am certain that is where he will be found.

What I am saying is: you don’t always get to pick your friends, Sometimes they pick you! And I picked you…………….
