" Lost in my back yard"

Our back yard is close to fourteen thousand acres and I doubt if anyone has ever been over every acre of it. My parents are into ranching in a large way. They have many people working on this ranch and I hardly know many of them and some I have never met.

We, the ranch owns a small airplane and it is used by the ranch foreman to cover most of the ranch area, One day when he was about to visit a few places on the ranch, he invited me to go along with him. He has been flying for more years than I am years in age. I have never heard of him having an accident while flying, We only spent a few hours and had our lunch at the first stop and were on our way to the next stop. We flew through some heavy winds, up and down drafts and got shook up some.

The instruments had gone wild and we really didn’t know where we were. The engine in the plane started to sputter and then it stopped. We made a landing, which is called a Dead Stick landing, in a very rugged place and while I wasn’t hurt, the Foreman was, and he was unconscious. I being a young girl, didn’t know very much about first aid.

People at our destination were expecting us, but it was doubtful if they knew the time we were to arrive. They’ll do some calling later, trying to locate us, but there wouldn’t a search started until tomorrow, We could have been way off course with all the instrument problems we were having.

But for now, what can I do for the foreman! We are down in valley or a canyon with rocks and brush, and this small plane will never fly again. Besides, it didn’t have a radio or the equipment that would help others locate us. Mother and Father were gone so they won’t know that I went flying with the foreman, And only one of the hired hands knew, and he was new, will he know who to tell? He most likely didn’t even know who I was.

I don’t see any blood anywhere, but I can’t tell if there were any broken bones. Things are such a mess, it’s hard to tell, I need to try and get him out of this wreck and how will we keep warm through the night. Oh, he is too heavy for me and I can’t move him. I guess I’ll just have to get as close as I can to him to keep him partly warm, but will his body help to keep me warm, guess we will find out.

We had a terrible night, almost froze to death and all those sounds from them wild animals, I was really scared. There was something that came close to that part of the wreak, that we were in, it bumped and shock it for a while, then it left. The foreman never did become conscious, he is probably worse off than I thought. But what can I do? I’ll gather up some brush and what ever I can find that will burn, just in case we are here another night. If only the foreman would wake up, he would tell me what to do. He moaned a few times during the night and that is all. It will be dark again in a little while. I wonder if he has any matches in his pocket.

Oh, I am sorry, I was looking for some matches so I could start a fire. Are you hurt anywhere, we have been here all day yesterday and all night and it looks like we will be here another night. Can you move, how about if I help you, all I can see is some nicks and scratches here and there. I’m alright, I just don’t know what to do!

He spoke and told me not worry, he didn’t know where we were, but someone will be looking for us and until they find us, they will cover every inch of ground.

Well we had a fire that night, it was small, but it did help. The shelter he put together helped. But finding something to eat, is another thing. With the trap he made, we hope to catch a rabbit or something we can eat. The roots and wild vegetables, as he called them, were terrible and if he think I will eat snake, he is crazy in his head.

How will we ever get up and out of this place. We will most likely die here and I do not want to die, If we were to start walking we are bound to find help some where. When the sun comes up we will know the directions,

Then the foreman said, but which way should we go from here? We could be walking for miles and miles and never find anyone. And until we know where we are, it would just be more of the same. We had better stay right here and find a way to signal them, if some one does fly over. But we don’t have any water, maybe we can get some out of the engine.

No, The engine is air cooled, it has no water. Well, let’s start looking for some water. That was when we heard the plane that was flying high up, it was a commercial air line and they wouldn’t be looking for us, and they wouldn’t be able to see us.

But the time and the direction of that plane, will tell us something. Have you every gotten on an airplane at this time of the day, he ask, that was going in the same direction, And where were you going? If we can figure that out maybe it will help.

All of a sudden, a wild horse came running up the gully
and the foreman yelled “Get out of the way” and let him pass, then we will have him trapped. With no way out at the other end, we will try to catch him and break him to ride, but we couldn’t hold him, he got away and went back the way he came. We decided to follow and see where he went.

After a number of miles we came to a place where three, maybe four draws met. There were hoof prints coming and going, in one of them. We followed and we found water, not much but enough for us to get a drink.

We rested and then moved on. Several hours later, the terrain changed and there was green grass and red clay. This was enough for the foreman to tell where we were. We made a change in our direction and started to walk, we found fresh water, and many hours later, we were spotted by another airplane that was searching for us.

That night we were well fed and in our own beds, My mother and father were still not home and the new young ranch hand had told no one about me. In fact it was a surprise to those that found us, to learn that I was with the Foreman,

I have made up my mind, to learn how to fly and cover all the ranch land and make a map and mark it so everyone will know where they are when they, them selves get lost. Oh my pilot, the foreman, has learned a lot also! I wonder if he is single? He can’t be that much older than I am! A June wedding would be nice, but any month will do.

Mommmm, Let’s talk…
