Training a Dog that is smarter than you.

A day for training the dog,

When you get a new pet or bring one into your home to care for temporarily, there are special things you should know. If you don’t get started off on the right foot, the four footer will be training you and that’s not all!

First you have to consider the age of the four footer and while they are soft, warm and affectionate, don’t be fooled. Most of these K 9’s are devil dogs, so keep your eyes open and don’t turn you back on them!

Let me mention a few things that one dog has taught me:

1. Never take a shower with the bath room door unlocked. As every one knows, dogs love to drink out of the toilet bowl and in doing so, they get water all over the seat. It’s quite a surprise when you go to set down on it!

If your bathroom happens to be one that does not have a vent fan and you have to open the door to keep the steam from fogging over the mirrors or windows, Put the four footer outdoors first. If you can’t do that, don’t turn your back to the door!

My first lesson was as follows: With shower complete, I turned around to place the non-skid mat in the proper place in the bottom of the tub. A cold noise found it’s way to the crack in my butt and sent me on a trip to the moon! The shower curtains were torn to shreds and the walls now need to be repaired and painted! The gouges and grooves on the wall are more severe than those found on Devils Tower, in Wyoming.

The four footer disappeared and was found that afternoon, hiding under the bed. Not to mention that my nerves were shot and all them visits to see a physical therapist.

2.One morning I went out to get the news paper and the four footer went with me. I thought maybe I could teach her to fetch the paper in the mornings. All went well, she carried the paper into the house and we exchanged the paper for a snack. I patted her on her back and told her what a good dog she was. She liked that and wagged her tail and licked my hand. We done it again the following morning and I was amazed at how quickly she learned. The third morning she was waiting at the door to fetch the paper.
I opened the door and we went to get the paper, this time she carried it to the back yard as the side gate was open. She said; let’s play, see if you can catch me and the paper will be yours.

Well I wasn’t up to a timely chase in the back yard, but I did get the paper, one page at a time and it was chewed all to pieces. Then I had to pick up all the pieces in the back yard. One more lesson learned well!

3. This loveable Devil Dog has chose to make my bed, hers. She loves to lay close and keeps one nice and warm on those cool nights. When ever I get up in the night, she moans to let me know I am disturbing her. She has taken to shaking pillows and bed covers and wants to play when it’s time for sleep.

This one morning I told her if she was going to sleep on my bed, she could help make it. And she pawed on it trying to get the wrinkle out or wrinkles in was more like it. I again rewarded her with a treat. And we went about our day. Later, when I came back into the living room, the bedding and all the pillows were taken off the bed and in a pile in the middle of the living room floor. The Devil Dog struck again! What have I done to deserve this punishment? If Dogs are man’s Best friend, I’ll take a couple of Cats!

Katie, even if you are a dog there are people that love you,
Grandpa
