Once upon a time, is how a fairy tale starts, but this is not going to be one of them fairy tales. When I was young, maybe nine or ten years in age, I was taken to my first parade. It was in Deadwood SD and it was called The Days of “76”. It was an annual thing and was always held on the first week in August, along with a Rodeo. People came from all over to take part in and enjoy the annual event.
There was a large number of floats, built with different themes, that were beautifully decorated and the best one was selected and won a prize. Cowboys and Indians and people dressed up in costumes of time, as well known people from the past and they marched in the parade. Covered wagons and men pulling fire carts, an undertaker’s wagon and marching bands playing snappy tunes, came from most cities around the area. The parade started at the lower part of Deadwood, at the fair grounds and ended at the Rail Road Depot at the other end of town. This was the time for the biggest traffic jam even seen in the area. The event also had a carnival with rides for everyone.
To start my story, this was the first time I had been exposed to Indians. Oh! I seen them in movie theaters, but it wasn’t the same. These Indians would hoot and holler and they smelled really bad. Most of them wore little clothing with colored feathers and bells around their ankles and arms, all over themselves. It must have been cold for them. They carried guns and shot them in the air. This scared the poop out of the horses and the part of the parade that followed, walked in the horse droppings. I saw many parades of the Days of “76” and they were all the same, when you had seen one, you have seen them all.
Most Indians lived on reservations and you could see some when going to the larger town or cities. When you were going to school you were always studying history and the Indian played a large part in the history of the west. There are seven Indian tribes in south Dakota, the Cheyenne, Pine Ridge, Standing Rock, Rosebud, Lower Brule, the Crow Creek and the Yankton. There are Indian tribes located all over the United States, Just to mention a few, like The Sioux, Cheyenne, Black foot, Apache and the Navaho. I doubt if all the tribe names are known by anyone outside of the government. There has always been an ongoing battle between the Indian and government of the United States. It started in the East and carried on into the west, as wagon trains carried people west to settle the country. The Indian said this land belonged to them and they attacked and killed the white people. The army of the United States than attacked the Indian and it is said they slaughtered children and women along with the Indian brave, as the Indian did to white families. In latter days, The Indian was badly outnumbered by the soldiers and they had to surrender to the solders or be annihilated.
The Indian said; The White Man bought the land from the Indian and gave the Indian all kinds of rights, made many promises, and gave them back land that was called a Reservation to live on. It has been said that promises were never kept. Who knows who said what, to who? Not me!
I wonder who was living on the land when the Indian came and who was here before that and before that? Who were they and where are the ancestors of these people. Did they come from the oceans and crawl up on to the land, or did they have four legs and a tail? What were they called and where did they go? Everyone has their own idea on that subject. What ever happened, you can believe the strongest, were the ones to keep the land.
Throughout history, wars were fought and the winner of the battle was the new owner of the land. The Indian claimed the land as long as he controlled it. He had no title to it just that he had been living on the land.
The strong take from the weak and sell to the rich. Some Indians learn the ways of the white man and succeed and survive. Most prefer to not accept the ways of the white man and never learn. The Indian ways are taught to the young Indian to preserve the culture. And these Indians are called, Native Americans and are kept in prisons called, Reservations.
People from all Nations come to America to live, They have to declare their intentions of becoming a citizen of this country and have to make application to do so, Once they pass all the is required, and swear their allegiance to America, they are swore in and become American citizens, Most people are accepted! People from all other Nations have to do this,
so why does the Indian (Not) have to do this?
For as long as I can remember, special places have been built for the Indian. Special programs have been put in place to serve the Indian. Special funds are funded to help feed, educate and assist the Indian. Government allotment are given to each Indian person along with health benefits. Open any phone book and see all the agencies listed to serve and help the Native American. And it is questionable if they are even a true citizen of America. Why have they not been made a citizen and let out of the prisons that contain them. One Nation under one Nation’s laws, One country with its own people.
Long ago, the Indian had no work on reservations or close by, The government decided to do something to keep him busy. So they gave him and others, a hand full of beads so they could make necklaces and some other trinkets. Items needed to make blankets. That seemed to work so they gave paint sets to others and created artists, but there was no place to sell them. So they built a museum and added a place to sell their crafts.
Why could they not have build a factory so they could have jobs and earn an income. Soon the Indian learned that do nothing and profit, was a much better way. So the Indian give-a-way program was enacted and it became a huge success. Now with a small amount of education, the Indian is much smarter that the white man.
After WW ll, a wounded Indian returned home in a wheelchair. He had distinguished himself deserved all that was awarded or granted to him, as he served his country well. Soon after that, other Indians noticed how life was so much better for him than it was for themselves. Almost immediately the reservation Indian became disabled, arms in slings, walking with crouches and canes, neck braces, back braces, blindness. Son after a number of disability payments were started. What made me mad, was I had brain damage and I couldn’t get a cent.
Our government tells us so many lies, we do not know what is true and what is not. They keep us in the dark and try to keep us confused, so we never know for sure, what is going on.
There will always be a problem as long as other Nations are allowed to exist within the boundaries of America. Why do we allow politics to condone this in our nation? Are most Americans not Americans at all? Who is driving the nation to destruction? Why are we letting this happen and why are you in hiding and not doing something about this.
Hispanics are entering our country so fast, they will soon be marrying up with Indians and taking over our country. If that happens, will there be a way to control them? What mother never told me, I learned from other kids. Mother’s never lie to their kids and kids tell it as it is!
Once there was a man named George. George was always the first to offer his help to the community and often done things by himself. Some people felt a little guilty and helped him for a while. George grew old and was unable to do more. George became sick and passed away. Thousands of people attended his funeral and many nice things were said about him.
The next time the community needed some help, there was NO George and no one else would offer their help. Soon after, people became sick and people started to die. No one would bury them. They are being pushed aside to make room for a play ground for the rich or something else. Soon you are the last person on earth, Now what are you going to do? All those years you went to school and then on to Collage or other higher learning institutions and you never learned a thing! I wonder what the nationality of the next people will be to occupy this land?
Why is it, that the Government can’t take care of the problems here in this country first and then help other nations? Notice I used the word HELP. Not Do it for them! If you want to be a free people, you have to do most things for yourself!
My name is “Indian Joe”, please stop the world from turning, so I can get off!
