Below level four-- Continued

As your remember, we left our two adventures citizens, having a basket lunch and they decided not to go investigating that day. How ever they were not the only ones to be upset and questioning the secrecy of the rumble coming from below. Groups had gotten together, some small and some larger and they all had planed to take some kind of action. Officials at the top were not saying anything and mostly because they didn’t know themselves what the trouble was.

People being shot, turned out to be un-true along with other stories being passed around. Unfortunately, some people want to be noticed more and they will say just about anything to get attention. People were demanding that the Mayor and other civic leaders, the Governor, find out, and make a report to the people. The state guard was called on to maintain the peace and be ready to act. Washington Diplomats were on the scene and there was mass confusion and people were falling over each others and no one knew what the other was doing or learning. If anything, the crowd control was getting out of hand. The officials ordered the people to go home or go to jail. Once peace was restored, the investigation continued. While they did find a number of old mining shafts in the area, there was no level four to be found.

They found and arrested some people for working a still and making whisky and others that were growing weeds, that were thought to be used in drugs, A few sleeping bears were disturbed and they became angry. Many fox and rabbits were flushed from their dens. They also found places where lovers had been meeting and making love. Not many stones were left unturned, but still, nothing could be found to explain what was going on. After that, it became quiet around the area and it seemed all was getting back to normal. Winter had passed and Spring was just around the corner, birds were doing what birds do, flowers were blooming and people were getting out to see what nature was doing. The mountain climbers were climbing the mountains and hikers had taken to the new country. Life was free and easy for most people.

One hiker was entering some rough and rugged country that was new to him and stopped to rest below a water fall. As he set there, he thought to himself, I‘ll bet I am the first man to ever be here, His eyes were focused at the top of where the water fall started. He thought he has seen something different high up there, but it wasn’t there long enough to tell what it was. He attempted to find a way to the top, but it appeared to be impossible. With a rope and climbing equipment and another experienced person, he thought it just might be possible. So he started to make plans to return, at a future time with someone to help and make it to the top. Several weeks had passed when he had located some one to go with him and they were gathering the equipment they would need. It was thought that it would only take a day, maybe two, and they would be back. But, we all know nothing ever works out the way we think it will.

It was a beautiful week end and they had gotten an early start, it had taken longer that he thought as he had trouble locating that area again, He should have drawn a better map and marked the trail so it was easy to find. But then it would only be a few days and his memory would handle that.

It was late in the afternoon and the sun was already over the horizon, they would make camp and start early in the morning. The sun is up and it looks like another nice day. The climb was difficult but they were making good time and the rest of the way up looked much easier. Once they got to the top, they couldn’t believe what they were looking at, A very large area, surrounded by high cliffs all around and from where they stood it was a gentle slop down to a valley that looked as if time had forgotten it.

(Well what did you expect ? this is the way all these stories go. )

There were streams of water and vegetation everywhere. The trees were so much taller than what they were use to and everything around looked to be of a giant size. We had started down the slop and as went the grass grew taller and taller and it was a fight to make any head way. It was so tall we couldn’t see over the top of it, We tried to climb a tree to see where we were, but that didn’t help any. While we were up in that tree, some thing was moving through the grass below us. We really couldn’t see it, but it was long and it wiggled it’s way through the grass. We agreed, that it had to be a very large snake. To a snake like this, we wouldn’t be any larger to it, than a mouse would be to us. Down from the tree and back to the top of the ridge. We decided we would follow the rim for a time and watch for anything below.

Night was setting in and we sat up a camp, had something to eat and got into our sleeping bags. It was after the dark of night had set in, when the ground began to shake and rumble. Was it an earth quake, maybe a Volcano, what ever, it scared the hell out of us. I for one, never went back to sleep. We continued to go around the rim and carefully watched below. We could hear things, but never seen anything! Since we saw nothing more, we returned to where we had camped the night before’ It was just dusk and the ground began to shake again, this time we saw why! A giant of a Rabbit was making love to a female Rabbit and the rabbit’s hind legs were thumping the ground so fast and hard, this was causing the ground to shake.

We left the area and returned home, we decided to not say anything to others as no one would believe us anyway and we would be branded as some kind of nuts. From time to time, the earth would shake and rumble, and we would say , small earth quake or volcanic action some where. Now turn off that light and go to sleep!
