Fanny and Jenny James. Both are young starting their teens and they have an outlaw nature. They are not related to one and other, one lives in Paris France and the other in Bellyhoo Texas.
Our story today, centers around “Sam the Cab”. A life long resident in a small community not far from Fargo North Dakota. He was born on a farm and attended a country school. Sam is also in his teens.
Around 1935 the family sold their farm and moved to Eastern Texas. Later they had gotten a ranch close to a place called Bellyhoo, Texas, where San attended High school. Why, you ask, in Bellyhoo, Texas? Because no one knows anyone in Bellyhoo. Most people don’t even know where Bellyhoo, Texas is. You won’t find it on a map, I don’t think.
World war two had started but the US was not involved as yet, Everyone knew they would be in the war soon. In December 1941, The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and America was involved in a full scale war. Young Sam wanted to do his part, so he answered the call by joining the Army. As troops fought across Europe and were about to invade Paris, Sam net this girl named Fanny, with a last name of James. The war came to an end and Sam was sent home to the US,
He had finished High school and was about to graduate from college. After graduation he had planned to return to France. He searched for this girl, Fanny and found her with a young daughter. The little girl was about two years of age, so there was no way it was his. Life in France was hard and there didn’t appear to be much hope for anyone there. Sam was thinking, if she could just get to the US, she would have a good chance of success.
But then the numbers of people that wanted to go to the America, was so large, that most would never make it. That was when she told Sam, as his wife, he could take her to America. Once there and she was a citizen, they could divorce and he would be free to live his own life. Sam had to give this a lot of thought. Since he was no longer in the Army, it wouldn’t be too hard to do. The wedding took place and she elected to keep her own last name, All necessary papers were filled out and approved and transportation was arranged for and they were on the way to the US. After arriving in New York, they were soon on the second leg of their journey, to Bellyhoo, that was located east of Crocket, Texas.
When Sam’s family first arrived there, in Bellyhoo ,it was a town of around fifteen thousand and by the end of the war it had grown to twenty or thirty thousand. N just a few years, it was close to forty thousand, it was growing fast and business was flourishing.
Sam had introduced Fanny to an old collage girl friend by the name of Jenny James. With their last names being the same they hit it off well. Jenny helped Fanny locate an apartment to live in and was helping her to find a job. Jenny was, what you would call, self employed.
Sam had met an old friend and this friend wanted Sam to go into business with him. The business was Transportation, starting a city bus line. Then Sam’s friend wanted to expand into Light Air Travel, but Sam wasn’t so sure about that. Sam bought out his friends half of the transportation business and the friend invested in an air line. Today the business is known as Texas Air Line.
Sam sold the bus business and started a taxi service. The business is Called “Sam the Cab” and he has over two hundred cabs serving around that area and other small towns. Sam and Fanny never did get a divorce, both were just too busy doing business. Fanny and Jenny own a number of Clubs around the area and have more money than they will ever need. The clubs are called the Bell Hole Clubs.
Small towns survive while big towns compete , little girls grow up to be big girls and little boys always want new toys to play with. Insurance is for old people that expect to die soon. Books are for reading and story teller’s tell stories for you to enjoy. Cats do not bark and dogs are mans best friend. No one is ever as free as a mouse so put out some cheese.
The poor will have to stay poor for a while longer. The government will never make anything work and I am going to try to find food in the kitchen. I know there is dog food and it isn’t too bad. There is a jar of peanut butter because the dog likes it. Crackers, who knows! Some old men live too long, is what old women say.
Leave the porch light on for me!
