Annie & Sandy

There is no Daddy War Bucks in this one.

My life was in danger and I was up for sale. What gives some people the right to sell what does not belong to them? Born a four footer and having had a number of different names, I have always provided for my self through thick, thin and the cold of night.

I became attached to this young girl named ”Sandy” or maybe it was she that became attached to me, I’m not sure, but we had spent a lot of time together. She belonged to me and I belonged to her and it was nice arraignment for the two of us.

Sandy was around the age of eight and she acted as if she was much older. She lived with the sister of her mother and her aunts friend , who was not much of a man and he appeared to be nothing more than a bum. How her Aunt ever became involved with him is impossible to believe. They were so different and she was older and he was just young boy. People just don’t go around looking for more trouble than they already have.

He was in a school when she first met him, had graduated from high school and was going to start college that next semester. He had a job as a cab driver and lost that. she was helping him while he was looking for another job and he had moved in with her. From that point on, he was nothing more than a bum. She fed him. gave a place to sleep and he offered nothing in return. He appeared to be honest, trust-worthy and sincere, she offered to help him. As soon as he found work he was to move into his own place. He would be out looking for a job in the day and remain at home at night. Then he was staying out most of the nights, spending time with girls and new friends. The aunt wasn’t sure if he was using drugs, but she suspected that he did.

As time passed, he became irritable and abusive, stayed out late and became angry at the slightest things. She had told him, he had to leave many times. but he would cry and Promise her any thing , but she, having such a gentle heart would let him stay.

I am the dog and my name is Annie. I did not like this guy and the longer he was there the more I disliked him, he would curse at me and kick if I was in his way and I almost had attacked him a number of times. Had he done anything to hurt these girls, I would have left him as raw meat. He had once turned me over to the dog catcher and told them I was a stray and they took me away, but I got away from them. Now he was trying to sell me to a dog kennel as a thorough-bred. He had even forged papers to show to the Kennel.

It wasn’t long before little things around the home were found missing, Then larger items like the TV and Stereo. It was first thought that burglars had taken these things. But small items kept disappearing from the home, it was being robbed too often so the police were keeping an eye on it. Robberies had doubled in this town and it was usually money or jewelry. We all know that young men are troublesome and when they decide not to work, they all turn to crime.

One day a city street cleaner was picking up a dead squirrel that had been run over. The squirrel had an expensive ladies watch in it’s mouth. A few days later there was a report that a ladies watch was taken from a home, The lady was Sandy’s Aunt and she identified it as being hers. Could the Squirrel be the one that has been taking things for this home? They set a trap but caught nothing.

Later some tree trimmers were thinning some trees a few blocks away and they found a nest with a good amount of jewelry in it, so they notified the police. They in turn questioned the property owners and they had no idea on the matter. When they were talking about the nest that was found, they said there was a squirrel that had a nest there but he hadn’t been around for a few days, they said; they were leaving food out for him but the food hadn’t been touched. When asked if they had noticed anything else that was different in the neighbor hood and were told about this cat. A cat was apprehended and questioned, but he wouldn’t talk. After doing more detective work, the police decided that the squirrel was the guilty party and the robberies had stopped. The case came to a dead end and was closed.

The young man had found a job as a hotel desk clerk was working nights and had starting going to collage. Then he had found a place to live and moved from where he had been living. As soon as he could, he was giving the Aunt a little money each pay day to repay her for her helping him. Annie and Sandy lived a happy life at the home with the Aunt.

Which just goes to show you, that even a dog can misjudge people, as easy as you or I do. Let us not be so anxious to judge a person until we really know them!
