The little guy was only four years old and an only child. It was a challenge for his mother and Father to keep up with him. He was just an average little boy with a curious nature. He wasn’t a lot of trouble, just surprising to what he could or would do at times.
One cool day, when he had gone out to play, he wouldn’t wear a jacket. About an hour later he was back home wanting his big coat with all the pockets, His Mother said, it was too much and he only needed a jacket, But the boy insisted and Mother gave in and he went out with the one he wanted.
By lunch time he was back once more and the coat was dragging on the walk and it was bulky and the arms were hanging really low. She ask, are you ready for lunch and he shook his head No. Then she wasn’t sure, but she thought she heard a kitten. So she ask, do you have a kitten under that coat? And he shook his head again “NO”.
It was then that a wagging tail was showing out of the coat. She asked again. What is that? and he said I don’t know! That is when the kittens head popped out. What is this she asked? but all the boy could say was: I don’t know!
She was taking the coat off of the boy and another kitten showed up, and then another and another. After all the pockets were empted, there were dozen or more kittens and she was asking where did these come from? But the little boy started to cry, so she didn’t push for an answer. Oh my! what was she to do? she would have to call around the neighborhood and make some inquires.
The boy had gotten his blanket and pillow and had curled up behind a living room chair and gone to sleep and all the kittens were tucked in around him. She had called most of the people that she was acquainted with and no one knew anything about new born kittens. Then a lady called her and said her cat was about ready for a litter of kittens, but the cat hadn’t been seen for almost two week and was about the age of these kittens.
After the boy woke, she put the kittens in a box and they all went to se this lady. The boy didn’t remember where he had found these kittens, but the lady was almost sure they belonged to her cat. She said she would keep them and feed them until they knew where they belonged. A few days later the lady called again and said her cat came home and had had a litter of kittens, so they were not hers.
The city pound was called and they said; there was no reports of missing cats but the police needed to be called as they may know something. In the meantime the little boy was crying and crying because he wanted the kittens. They promised him a puppy, but he said “NO” the kittens were what he wanted and he continued to cry. An ad was placed in the city news paper and word traveled by mouth until everyone in town was searching for some one who thought the kittens were theirs.
Many people wanted just one, but wasn’t the answer to the problem. The police said that someone from some where had most likely dropped the cat off in that neighborhood and left. The kittens all found a home at the City Pound.
It wasn’t long before the boy came home with another cat and soon there were cats everywhere. The boy grew and the cats flourished and the City pound was over flowing and a couple of Dog and Cat catchers were hired by the city and the city council had to pass some new laws on animals. No one had ever complained about mice after that. The parents grew old, the boy grew up and married and tears are still falling over kittens.
Has anyone seen my shoe? It was right here by the fence, last night!
