Birthdays are for kids young and old.

We spent yesterday, Sunday February 6th. in a small town of Pringle in the south west part of the state of South Dakota. Pringle has maybe 127 people living in it. A relative was having an open house Birthday party at the fire hall there, He was celebrating his ( 80 ) Birthday. My daughter was good enough to drive my wife and I, there and back.

I always enjoy visiting with old people, there must have been at least twenty old guys with white beards there. Any one of them could have been Old Saint Nick himself. I heard a story while there, that I just have to pass along. It seems there is a community house there, that is a home for some local old folks who are in various States of memory loss. The community takes care of them. Any way I had my little dog with me and we use to take him to nursing homes for visits with the people there. Old people love to have small pets visit them. There wasn’t many there. At this brain drain house, Maybe five or six. They all wanted to hold and hug the little dog and he didn’t mind it either.

There was one thing that I noticed about these people, they all were wearing those athletic shoes that we buy for walking or running. I under stood that a few years back a shoe salesman had visited the town, he traveled around selling shoes for one of the Taiwanese Shoe manufactures, and offer to supply the town with shoes at a great discount if they bought a certain number of them. So they did and they got a big discount.

After that a number of people started to have memory losses. It was like an epidemic going through the little town. There was no doctor in the area that knew the reason why. An article appeared in a medical journal for doctors around the world to see and doctors came from France, Germany and Swaziland and many other countries to evaluate this illness or disorder. No one knew or could they find the reason for this Problem.

After a time. they heard that there was a retired New York doctor that lived high up in the Rocky Mountains, In Idaho, He had treated people with a similar problem with a 99 percent cure, but he wouldn’t travel. People would have to come to see him in the mountains. He was one of them Expensive New York Doctors that had made a fortune and retired to the Rocky mountains.

The community really didn’t have a large amount of funds to spend, but after discussing it a number of time, they decided to send one person there and see what happens. Everyone wanted to send their relative first, but they held a contest and the winner would be sent there. Letter were written and an agreement were made. And the day came to start the trip. Two of the towns people and one patient would travel by car to get there. Somewhere about half way across the State of Wyoming, the car broke down. They got as far as a old Indian trading post and had to stop there. The car could not be repaired, so there was no way they could continue on to the mountains in Idaho.

One day an Old Indian Medicine man came into the trading post and listened to the problem that the travelers were having. He told them that he could cure the brain drain problem. But they would have to spend a couple of weeks at his lodge and buy some moccasins, and they agreed. Arriving at his lodge, the medicine man built a large fire and other Indians beat on drums while others chanted and danced around the fire. This went on for two days and two nights. He than took the shoes that the patient was wearing and tossed them in the fire. A strange color of smoke rose high in the air and it took many hours to disappear. He would shake his rattle and speak in a strange language, a number of times after that.

Two weeks later, the patient’s mind had started to come back to normal and his memory was slowly returning.. The old Medicine Man had worked a miracle and it had only cost them a few trinkets. Now they knew what to do to cure of the others.

They returned to Pringle took all them shoes from Taiwan, tossed them all in a big pile and had a great bon fire. The patients all recovered and are all back to normal. The house now has a For Rent sign on it. How about it, Do you want to live in a small community with friendly people?

I’ll bet you would like to know what the problem was! Those shoes from Taiwan all had an innersole of sponge, When the heat from the foot warmed up the sponge, the sponge sucked all the moister out of the brain, and the brain cells had nothing to keep them floating around and cool. They dried up and got hard they fell to the bottom of the skull. The brain would no longer work.

The message of this story is: Buy American shoes and live in a small friendly community.
