I was one of eight, we were all born on the same day. We do not look alike, but we all have long ears and a long tails and four legs. When it is time for us to eat, we all lay side by side and have lunch or dinner together. That is, all but one of us, This one was different, when we first opened our eyes, there it was, so he must have been the ninth one.
This one was nothing like the rest of us. He or she had long beak, a long neck, only two legs and big yellow feet. He or she never ate with us, This puppy was always picking things up off the ground and eating them. what ever it was. It could out swim all of us, when we went to have a drink, this one was always splashing or swimming around.
We lived just out of town, it wasn’t a farm, but we had a barn, maybe it was just a shed. There was a garden that was all fenced in with a gate that we couldn’t open. “Oh” there was a pony and a cart for the little girl that lived there.
When we got a little older and when the little girl went for a ride in her cart, Us puppies would run along side the cart and bark at the wheels as they turned. That is, all but this strange one. It had to set up front on the seat with the little girl. It couldn’t bark like the rest of us, but it made quacking sound. Like it was trying to get something out of it’s throat. It always had it’s neck stretched out with the beak pointed into the wind,
A few years later, a flock of birds were flying overhead and this strange one took off and flew away with them. But once a year, it came back for a visit. We later learned that it was called a Gander and when it was young it had gotten separated from it’s mother and that is when it joined our family.
We have a celebration each year that he come by. We named him “ Old Yellow Foot” but old Yellow Foot, hasn’t been around for several years now. We have been told that some hunter had fired buckshot at Old Yellow Foot and he has so much buckshot in his behind, that he can no longer get up and off of the ground. Commercial flights cost too much to travel that way. My I ask? Have you ever been Goosed or Gandered?
