Now this was not your usual sports club, It was made up of young, old and all of those in between. The game was played according to the rules that the majority of the player’s agreed to. Everyone that played had a glove about two, maybe three times larger then a catcher’s mitt, as you know it to be.
The balls that were used were more like a pool table ball and they were hard and some were rocks, and were many different colors, depending on which of the players was throwing it. They each used their own ball.
The players rotated to a different position with each out! A runner was chosen and would stand in the center between all seven bases, The bases had to be on an agreed number of feet apart and twenty feet for where the runners started from.
Those that the ball was thrown too, would have to stay standing on a base to catch the ball when it was thrown to them. The runner could run to any base and the ball would be thrown to that base and if the ball arrived at that base first, the runner was out.
If the runner was hit bay the object thrown, he or she was also called out. The runner could change his mind after he started to run and go to another base but he had to complete his run to that specific base of his second choice. He or she would return to the center three times, them positions would change and the game would start over again.
There were no batters, as the ball was thrown to where ever the person holding it, wanted to throw it. The one that was the runner, could run to wherever he or she wanted to, but if the ball got there first, that person was out and those that were put out of the game had to clean up the area after the game. The next runner would be the last person standing on base seven.
Those that are called out, will receive first aid if an injury had been received, before the game is continued. No game has ever lasted for more than three hours, do to the lack of, the number of players left standing.
The game is always played outside and half of the people are allowed to be barefooted, and the other half, have to wear a cloth eye cover while playing!
Games are played on week ends only. There were four referees for each runner and that number could be reduced if enough referees can not be found !
When the game is over, the balls are shot up into the air by a device and shot at by people using cross bows. However, no games have been played since the mid 1700,s.
A version of this game is still played today. An equal number of players will form two lines a minimum of forty feet apart,
Each player will have a glove of his own liking. A ball similar to a tennis ball, is thrown to any one person, in the line on the other side. The ball can be thrown high low, fast or slow, hard or soft
The object is: if the ball is missed or was to falls to the ground, the person that it was thrown too, is called out. The last person standing is the winner and they alone can clam all the prizes that were placed on the winner’s table.
Each person that plays in the game must place a prize on this table. It can be something old, something new or just about anything that will not spoil. The last person standing will take all.
Did you know that this is how the first Wal-Mart store was started ?
“What was that you say!” This is all a tall tale! Can you prove it ? Go ahead and try…….
