I waited until dark, opened a window in the bed room, being real careful not to make a sound. It was only a short distance from the window to the ground. So far so good! I then went around the corner of the house to the back yard, opened the gate. It made a noise that scared the cats that were digging in trash cans, That noise, was heard inside the house and someone turned on the lights and opened the back door to see what the noise was, and I hide.
As soon as the back door was closed, I went to the front of the house and rang the door bell. When Dad opened the door and saw me, he ask what was I doing outside? I told him, when he went out the back door to see what the noise was, I went out the front to check for the noise. The truth was, I was scared as hell and wanted to get back in the house.
The next time I decided to run, I did it in the day light and had made a plan. All I would need is some food and money, what money I could find around the house. Food wasn’t a problem, but money was hard to find. I thought about slipping some out of mom’s purse, but that would be bad and I had never done anything like that before.
Than I thought to myself, why are you running away, I had forgotten the reason. Better make some new plans. I was fed real good, had real nice clothing and I had toys enough for a dozen kids, I was loved had all kinds of special things that I ask for and I just received my first bicycle, What could I possibly gain by running away? Having an adventure, wouldn’t be much, fun if you were all alone.
Back to the old drawing board. Then I ask my friends if they had even tried to run away and only one, a girl, said she did. I ask why and what happened, she said the police came a got her and took her to jail, until they learned her name and where she lived, Said: she wanted a new Doll and no one would get one for her. She was four years old.
One time when I was about eight years old, I was having fun and teasing my older sister and she didn’t want to be bothered. She kept telling me to leave her alone and stop being a pest. She called mother and mother told me to stop, but I didn’t and mother gave me a spanking. That did it, now I had a reason to run away from home. Then they would miss me and fell sorry for me and maybe even shed a tear or two.

Well, I made it, all the way to the next town and hung out in this towns library. I would hide when they closed the building for the night. I was there for two nights before I went on with my journey, where I was going from there, was information I never had.
This town was new to me and I had no idea of which way to go. So I went back to the town that I knew about. I went into a grocery store to get something to eat. I was spotted by a woman that knew my mother and she ask if I was with my mother. I said No, cell phones are so much faster, and that was the end of my freedom again.
Some years later, I decided that I didn’t want to go to school, I was a dummy, never learned anything, I just sat there and day dreamed. I was older in years and a couple of grades behind the other kids.
The Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor and the President had declared war on Japan. Young men were being drafted into service and the Navy needed some good men, so I enlisted.
I wanted to be a Hero and have some ribbons and medals on my uniform, But when the navy found out I was too Young, they sent me home. But when I was old enough, Dad signed the enlistment papers and once again I was a Navy Sea Bee’s.
It is now year 2012 and I haven’t thought about running away for some time, But all I need is a good reason……..
Come along with me, Let us find out where this road goes!
