Alaska has many rugged mountains and I was stationed on a base that had many of these mountains. I had been on this base for awhile and other Navy personal came and left. I made friends with some of them while they were there and they wanted to go up into some mountains as they had heard many things about them. I had been in some areas, a few times, and thought I knew my way around, enough to act as a guide.
One of these guys had heard of a dam that was suppose to be close to the base that had some very large fish in it and it wasn’t too far away. I had never seen myself. Once we were out away from the base, we spread apart, with myself on the left, one of the other guys on the far right. I told them a number of times, stay insight of each other and holler if you can’t see each other. They said they understood and would do as I told them.
About ten minutes into our walk, I could no longer see or did I hear anything. I hollered, but there was no return call. We were separated and I turned to follow in the direction they had went but couldn’t find them. They were lost and so was I! I wandered around looking for something to tell me where I was, but nothing looked familiar.
Unknown to me, the two fellows with me that were on my right hand side, the one in the middle was walking a little bit faster than the guy on his right, causing them to make circle that was drifting to the right. From the point where they could see each other, they would go forward and the circle would change directions.
Eventually they had turned enough to be walking back to where we had started. They had found the small pond and it did have fish in it, but they the kind you would use for bait for larger fish.
As I kept on going, I thought I heard something to my right, thinking it was the two guys with me, I would stop and watch for them But what ever it was, it appeared to be getting closer and closer. Then I heard the sound coming from in front, then off to my left and from in back. It was coming from everywhere. Now the chilling fear is traveling through my body and my heart is a pounding away in my chest, I was almost at a point of crying tears. Then, through the trees, I saw part of it, it was large and gray, it was a big wolf that was looking for food. I ran in one direction, but there he was. I ran in another and again he was there, he was blocking my every move.
I came to some large boulders and found a place where I could squeeze into a crack between the two boulders and there was no other way out. I dropped my back pack and tried to get a little farther into that opening, but I was as far in as I could go.
The Wolf is reaching in with his paw trying to get a hold of me, but he wasn’t able. He started to dig a hole in the ground to get closer. The claws on his paw had hooked my shirt and torn it almost off of me. He got a hold of one boot and got it off my foot and tore it to pieces, My trousers were almost gone. I thought, if ever I needed any help, it was now!
Then this voice from above me said: Why don’t you just tell the wolf to go away and leave you alone? So I did and the wolf went trotting off into the forest dragging my back pack with him. I squeezed out from those boulders and then I saw this little man dressed in a funny looking red and green suit, He said: are you trying to get my gold and I said: What gold. It is under your feet, so I looked down and there was a pot of golden coins. He told me to take what I wanted and go. I filled what was left of my pockets, but the weight was more than I could carry. I had to empty my pockets down to where I had but one gold coin in each hand.
The next thing I can remember, I was in a place looking at everything that I ever wanted. Things to wear, things to eat. Things to play with. I thought to myself, I can buy anything I want, so don’t be greedy.
That when I saw this Big gray wolf chewing on my foot, but I never felt a thing. The funny looking little man and the wolf were one in the same, they could change back and forth from a man to a wolf. I was dead and my bones had been picked clean.
But I knew he would be sorry and would have gotten even, I knew the big bad wolf would have one hell of a stomach ache, because I had been sick for a week and whatever it was, it was contagious.
That was when this hand was shaking me and yanking the bed covers off of my body and a voice was saying, Get up, it’s time to go to school and this is the last time I am going to call you.
