That was many years ago, I remember that night well, it was clear and bright and the heavens were lit up like a giant Christmas tree. I was so excited and I wanted to stay up until the sun came up and watch it. Through out the years I have spent a lot of my time just standing out side, watching it.
I was so excited that I could hardly wait to tell my Grandfather about it. Finally the day came when we were going to visit Him and Grandmother, on the old farm. It took for ever to get there. And I couldn’t remember of it ever taking this long before. But we got there and when the car stopped, I jumped out and ran to the farm house calling for Grandfather, but he wasn’t in the house, he was out in the field working. I was told, it was just too far for me to run and that I would have to wait until he came in. The time just drug by and finally he came.
I ran as fast as I could yelling, Grandpa, Grandpa, I bought a star! He looked at me and said What” I repeated , “I bought a Star “and he looked at me and said, why would you do something so dumb? I was so down hearted as I thought he would be so excited, but he just looked at my Dad and mother, and said: why would you let this kid do such a stupid thing like that?
I grew up, married and we had children of our own. One night I told them that one of them stars up there belonged to me. The children were so excited and were jumping up and down and asking, can we go there, what’s it’s name and a thousand other questions. How ever, my wife looked at me and silently said: why would you do a stupid thing like that? Then she ask, which one did you buy? And does it have a name? My reply was “No” but it has a long number and I have a paper with the number on it, that says I own it. Then everyone was yelling; Let me see it, let me see it… which one is it , which one is it!
I pointed high up in the sky and said: see that real bright star there? Now look 600 billion miles to the left, then look down another 300 billion miles and you see that group there that are barely visible? Well it is in that group. I had never heard so many Aw’s and disappointments expressed by my kid before. Then one of the kids ask, do they all have big numbers, I said “yes and they also have names that are like famous people here on earth. Those in that group were given names like our Senator’s and Representatives. Those stars all have big numbers and see how they flicker, they will eventually die and disappear. Just like them people in Washington will………………………
