" The Boulder Canyon Ghost House "

A true Story! Charlotte "Belle" Linton, was born to, Ella "Josephine" 'Baker' Linton and Samuel "Morgan" Linton, on April 1st. 1884. They lived in a sod house on a homestead on Elk Creek, near Tilford, SD.

Charlotte "Belle", who was called "Lottie" was the oldest of six children, four girls & two boys. Lottie was a pretty little girl, she had green eyes, dark auburn hair, was very bright and learned to walk at nine months. She attended school at Tilford, SD and only went to the sixth grade. She was a kind, loving person and it is said, that she had a really bad temper.

When Lottie was a young lady, her parents moved to an old house in Boulder Canyon, which is about half way between the towns of Deadwood and Sturgis. If you know where the club house is, at the Boulder Canyon Golf Course, the location is south of there.

Once there was a small damn, where the highway is today. The road came up on the south side of the damn and crossed the face of the damn, then turned and went west. Where the Club house stands today, There were some old farm building there at a later time. On the south side of the damn before you crossed the face of the damn, there were two canyons, one was small and the other was quite large and today it is called Bolder Creek Gulch.

One night, while Lottie was sleeping, a cold icy hand had grabbed a hold of her foot and she woke up screaming. Everyone in the house was awaken and went to see, what was wrong, but they couldn't find a thing, except her foot was as cold as ice. One night around midnight, the neighbors had noticed series of strange bright lights, going around the chimney and really bright lights coming from the house windows, and ask how they were made? Lottie's parents told them, all we have are some coal oil lamps and they are out at midnight. However, the house would get so warm around midnight, it would make everyone sweat. And there were other strange things going on around the place.

Later they moved out of the house and were staying with some neighbor’s that lived on a hill side close by. Grandpa Linton and three other men, decided to spend a night in the house and see what was going on. Other people were watching from a distance away. At midnight, the house lit up inside, as bright as day. They could see men inside, who were walking around. A ball of light, came from the corner of the cellar and streaks of light, like lightning, went up and around the chimney and then, every thing went dark. Later, the men were ask, what they had seen and their reply was, that they seen nothing, but they could feel some heat and didn't know where it came from.

Later they learned, that the house was once occupied by a group of highway men, around 1795. They had robbed stage coaches and travelers on their way to Deadwood and killed a number of people in the area. A woman from a Deadwood saloon and dance hall, was liviiing with them and problems developed between her and the gang. She was going to tell what she knew about these men and it was said, that they killed her and buried her in the cellar, under that house.

Other people had lived in this old house and no one could stay there very long, When ever they went down into the cellar, they would become deathly ill. There were other stories about the old ghost house in Boulder Canyon.
