"It was late in August"

It was in late August, one of the hottest days in the history of, Anytown, U.S.A. Most of the people were overheated from spending their day, working in the heat.

The Theater in this small township is the only building with Air Conditioning, so everyone will be there tonight. There is usually someone playing the organ and they have a sing along before the movie starts and after that there is a talent contest and personal acts. Children have usually left the theater before any adult acts are performed.

The girls had just left the stage area to go to the dressing rooms and an middle aged women walked across the stage, got a microphone from the other side and carried it back to the center of the stage. She stood there for a few moments and waited for the piano player to start, She had her hands cupped together, when she started to sing. It was a high note, that was thought to have set off the fire alarm.

The theater emptied really fast, that is all, but one sleeping, half drunk guy, in the center of one of the rows. An usher came to get the man out of the building, but he refused to leave, A second person came to help and they had to drag him out to the lobby.

There, He broke lose from them and ran down the isle and up onto the stage, then off to one side where the dressing rooms were located. By the time the usher and the other man got there, they had no idea where the guy had gotten to. Then they heard a scream, it was a man, then there were sounds of furniture breaking and getting bounced around. More screams and a few grunts and groans.

They tried to open the door, but it was locked tight. Then came some shouting and sounds of hard breathing. She must have had him down on the floor, A few minutes more, was when the guy broke through the door. His clothing was torn to rags, the old girl was right behind him, She wanted him bad, and was going to do what ever it took to get him. The sheriff had to take the drunk guy into protective custody.

The town didn’t have a fire department and there was little that anyone could do. They all stood around and watched the building burn down, along with the old court house building.

There was but one place where a person could cool down now that the theater was gone, It was the stock pond and the fishermen and cattle didn’t like that idea at all.

The town only had around four hundred people and that included the children. This was a town of poor people and they could not afford to pay for any new building. Everyone owed taxes and hardly anyone could pay their bills, It was truly a town for the poor!

It was them, that one of the towns oldest residents passed away. The little church was over crowded as some people came from far away. Among them was a brother to the deceased. He was there to dispose of his brother’s property. Little did anyone know, the property was worth a large fortune to the small town. There was Railroad close by, Water could be gotten from a large lake that wasn’t far away. People were few but with a place for employment, they would come.

After the funeral, the town’s people held a reception at the church. The visitor was talking with them about the property and asking if anyone wanted to buy it? Several said yes, but they had no money or income to buy it with.

Then he thought about it and decided that he didn’t have a need for the property or the money. He told the town’s people, he would give the property to the town, but there would have to be an agreement between him and the town’s people. The property could only be used or sold for the town’s improvements or advancement. The town’s people would have to agree to this, one hundred percent as to it’s use of the property and that would have to benefit the town as it stands to date. They all agreed and the property became the property of the town.

It took a few years and many meetings to find the best solution. It was decided that an industry should be invited to attend some meetings along with several real-estate dealers and find out if they would be interested.

In the end, an Industry bought the land and built a large factory that employed thousands and thousands of people. New homes were built and the town prospered and grew into a good sized city, with hospitals, museums, parks, Churches of all faiths, swimming pools and schools, Libraries and one of the finest fire departments in the country. Anytown became the prize town of the state, and it could also be found on any modern map!

Some times it takes more than fame and money to build a monument. You may have a Bridge or Faces carved in a rock or the worlds tallest building, but we have a wonderful place to live a good life!
