We have an old barn in our community that is called “The Milk Shed” It is used for the birthing of Babies and embalming of bodies. And services are held there for the dead.
Most of the women go there to have their babies, Ma was there when she gave birth to the twins. We are not sure where Beau came from, but he was wrapped in the same blanket as the twins when Ma got home. He didn’t look anything like the twins, no matter how you looked at him, so we took him back to the Milk Shed. They said: no, he was part of the set.
Beau grew three times a fast as the twins, he had the biggest ears and always had a grin on his face. When people saw the twins, everyone wanted to hold and hug them and Beau thought that to be a lot of fun. He would hug everyone and then giggle and grin. Sometimes you would have to pry he arms off of a person, especially they were big girls.
Beau never has had shoes, there was no shoe on earth that would fit his feet. Beau was the happiest child of all, if you could call him a child. He never had a sick day , all the time he was with us. We never were sure where he came from or if he really belonged to us. When the other children went to school, Beau stayed on the farm and worked and he could do more work in a ten hour day, than a dozen hired men.
But then, Beau ate four times as much food. Beau always slept in the barn as that is where he wanted to be. The animals excepted Beau, as being one of them, so it was a perfect arrangement. Beau would go down to the dam and take a bath every morning and evening and at times he would come back with a string of fish.
If a team of horses with a wagon was to get stuck in mud, Beau would just lift it up and set on dry ground. If a tractor got stock, Beau would pull it out to dry land.
Beau could lift a half grown tree with roots, out of the ground and tote any boulder where ever you wanted it. Sometime he would just dig another deep hole and bury it. Beau was as gentle as a new born lamb and he out lived several generation of the family. When the farm was passed down from one generation to the next, Beau became a part of, and went along with the farm.
Everything on the farm was fixed up. painted and repaired and the best looking farm in the state. It was often showed as a show place, in the county. Beau knew what the farm should look like and he pretty much did everything his own way. One time Beau was digging a deep well and there was a cave in. People gathered to dig him out and when they got to the bottom, Beau wasn’t there! He had dug another hole up to the surface, a hundred feet away, and a stream of clear water now flows across the property.
The old Milk shed is looking better than ever, with new paint and all the repairs needed are done. The women no longer use it for birthing of babies, No one is willing to take a chance, everyone says, one Beau in the country was enough.
After many years, Beau went for a walk to the city. And has never been seen since. But each year, at the County Fair, you will find a monument and a big brass plaque, of the greatest farmer in the State “ Beau” who ?
Some say: Beau is out there still walking, others say that he found himself a sweetheart in the swamps and she and he are now living and working at a large Amusement Park in the south east. Man without a good women, is no more than a wet spot in the sand.
Beau! Call home.
