A Tuna called Charley

This is not an original story, but it is one that most of you have heard before. Well, maybe you haven’t heard it, but you heard a story, something close to it.

Charley lived in the North Atlantic, he was born and attended school, Tuna High school there, a number of years ago. I have no idea how old Charley is and it is doubtful that he knows himself. His family disappeared soon after his birth and are scattered all over the North Atlantic. Some of them may be found in the Gulf of Mexico or even in the Pacific ocean. You may even have some of his family, in a can on your pantry shelf.

Charley became famous for his ability to swim backwards. It was strange or unusual for any fish to swim in reverse. If a much larger fish was looking for a meal and came nose to nose with Charley, The big fish would open his mouth to swallow Charley, but before he could close it, Charley was gone. Sometimes, Charley seemed to tease them big ones, just to show them how fast he was.

Charley was really interested in reading books, he intended to become the most knowledgeable fish in the sea. When others ask Charley, how was it that he can swim backwards, Charley couldn’t answer as he didn’t know himself, All he knew was: if he made a quick action, he went backwards. The rest of the time, he went forward.

Charley had read every book in the fish library and over the years he had grown to be over five foot in length and was over two hundred pounds. Charley learned early in life, to avoid those fisherman’s hooks, baited with worms. He approached one when was really small, but the worm was so big, all he could do was to nibble on one end. The fisherman never even knew his was there.

As time went on, Old Charley would swim the waters of the world and visit all the libraries that could be found. His brain was so packed with bits and pieces of information, he was hardly able to keep it all separated.

One day as Charley was swimming around, he saw this fisherman’s hook with a grasshopper stuck on it. When the grasshopper saw Charley and he motioned for Charley to come closer. Then he ask Charley to help him, he seemed to be caught on this hook. The grass hopper had been on a hook and in the water so often, he had learned how to breath while under water. Charley helped him to get free from the hook and this became a growing friendship, Charley called the grasshopper, ‘Hoppy” and hoppy went every-where with Charley.

They explored old ship wreaks and underwater caves, saw many strange things and had a number of near death experiences. There were more dangerous things in the sea, than he had ever known. Once, when they were exploring this old ship, they found an old bottle setting on a rack in the Captain’s quarters of a sunken ship. Hoppy was sniffing at the opening of the bottle and decided to investigate farther. Soon after, Hoppy was acting kind of funny. He was unable to stand up-right and kept falling over on his side. Charley couldn’t understand anything that Hoppy was saying, as Hoppy was laughing and giggling and slapping his leg and couldn’t tell, up from down.

Charley was trying to get Hoppy to come out of the bottle, but Hoppy was having such a good time, he paid little attention to Charley. Charley swam close to the neck of the bottle, put his mouth around the neck and tried to suck Hoppy out of that container, but all he got was a mouth full of what- ever was in the bottle. Have you ever see a drunken Tuna?

We return to our story, sometime later. A Tuna and a Grasshopper are just awakening from a place they had never been before. Both are saying; “Never Again”! Never will they let curiosity lead them that far again. It took several days before their eye sight was clear again! Charley was still experiencing vision problems when he swam backwards. He would be in big trouble if he were to face danger anytime soon. The grasshopper was just staying in one place, it was not because he couldn’t move, but because he didn’t want to move.

Once before, Charley found a bottle that had a note in it, but the cap was screwed on and he couldn’t read what the note said. He took the bottle home and it was still there abouts, somewhere. Then it came to him, if they could get the cap off the bottle, Hoppy could go inside the bottle and read the note. Charley had another Lobster friend called Claw, If Claw could hold the bottle with one claw and unscrew the cap with his other claw, then Hoppy could get into the bottle and read the note. This all worked as planed and when Hoppy read the note, it said: “HELP, I am on an Island” and that was all there was left to read.

It was then that Hoppy had this great idea! If they could get all the fish in all the oceans to scan all the unpopulated island and see if anyone was stranded on them? Then they could put a note on a fisherman’s hook and the fisherman could pass the information along to the proper authorities.

Soon after, thousands of people were being rescued and returned to their homes.

Charley and Hoppy are still out there, saving lives and the friendship has grown stronger with each passing year. Charley was nominated to become the new King Neptune, but he lost to a cute little cuddle fish and now there is a Queen Neptune in place of a King,
